Wk2 into Wk3

With a blood test at the start of last week, just to check that there wasn’t anything untoward, I was keen to get back to training and was careful to take it easy this week too.

The blood tests came back normal, as I kind of expected. And as the week went on, after two weeks of a stupid cough and sinus headaches, I started to feel back to normal.

This had been the plan at the start of the week, but it slowly slipped away from me, but it turned out to be a good week after all. Quite a few runs and plenty rest for me.

On Monday (12th) I was feeling pretty miserable. Sore head at work all day. I hadn’t managed to get a run in in the morning as I hadn’t been able to get out of bed for a 630am run. There was no way I was running on Monday night, darkness and sore head, so I took it as a rest day and had an early night. Time to start afresh on Tuesday.

Here’s what I ended up doing last week:

Mon: Rest
Tues: 5.1M tempo run
Wed: 4.3M easy run
Thu: Rest (4M walk to train stations)
Fri: 25 min speedwork (3.24M)
Sat: Rest
Sun: Rest

Again, in Tuesday I had an aversion to early morning darkness, and it was pretty horrible and frosty. So I decided to change tact and try running at lunchtime instead.

I got up at 7am instead of the usual 730 when I get up and ready for work. Early into work, then I took a slightly extended lunch break to do a good 5.1 miles in 40 mins, a change and lunch. It was good to run through town and somehow all of the traffic lights seemed to be in my favour (green man).

I did the same on Wednesday and felt good, was going to run 5k, but ended up doing about 4.3 miles. Still it made me feel great. Nice n easy. I felt like I was back.

Both days it was windy and cold, but at least it was light and not raining… Or snowing. Yet. It seemed like the runs were helping me get back on track and feeling back to normal.

Thursday I took a good rest day, with a long work day in Edinburgh. At queens street for 8am, then home by just before 8pm. I walked around 4 miles between home, train stations and work in Edinburgh.

So it seems the darkness of winter is getting to me. Being the excuse I need not to train. And now, the ice has also become an excuse. I managed to avoid training on Saturday and on Sunday, but did a good short speedwork session on Friday.

The snow had come by Friday, but some of it had thawed around the Clyde so I was able to run reps around about the bbc at the Clyde for my Friday session at lunch.

Friday was, 25 minutes of short intervals – see how far I can run – 5 mins warm up, then 15 x 30 secs fast, 30 secs recovery, 5 min cool down. It went pretty well. Nasty at points, but I knew it was only going to last 25 mins so it was ok.

Some fast efforts, 5:51 – 6:14 min miles (for 30 seconds) – now the next 25 minute speedwork session I do, I’ll aim to beat the distance run (3.24M).

I missed out our ‘long run’ of this week, which we’d planned to do on either Saturday or Sunday. As part of training for the Balloch to Clydebsnk half marathon it should have been 6 miles run this weekend, by I’ll pick that up at some point next week instead.

No strength work or swimming last week, I wanted to ease myself back into it, so dropped them off.

Here’s me red faced after the intervals.

Someone said to me there, after that pic was taken,
‘have you been out for your run yet?’ I said ‘yes! Doesn’t it look like it’ and she said ‘I think you’ve got your sparkle back in your eyes’.

Nice to have the ‘sparkle’ back.

The weathers meant to be cold and snowy, maybe until Tuesday or Wednesday, so I’ll try and do the following for next week:

Mon: AM Strength PM Swim coach / swim
Tue: Rest
Wed: 4M easy run
Thu: 6M easy run
Fri: 25 min intervals (1 mins)
Sat: Rest
Sun: 8M run

I’m going to aim for at least 2 rest days a week, or maybe even more depending how I’m feeling. The training plan below has now become a loose guide, with the long run and the interval (25 or 35 min) run as must runs.

2 rest
3-4 runs
1 strength
1 swim (maybe)

And a badly needed haircut on Thursday after work.

Oh and I said in an earlier post that I hate snow. It’s not show I hate, it’s ice. Snow is lovely, it’s when it sticks around and freezes that I hate. 🙂

Here’s hoping for a good week next week (and that the ice goes away).
