My job pacing 50 at the Glasgow woman’s 10k

Well the Glasgow women’s 10k was another great event this year. In It’s 20th year and my fourth time running it, the weather could have been better but the event was well organised as ever.

I’d been lucky enough to get the opportunity to be a pacer for a 50 minute time, which meant Id be trying to run at around 8:00 to 8:04 minute miles. Pacers were a new thing this year, but I think it was a great idea and we seemed to help people complete the 10k, in some cases beating their pbs, in others just running and having fun.

I spoke to a few runners on the route. Lesley was with me from the start until at least 4 miles in and she might have stuck with me for longer. I’m not sure as I was concentrating on keeping my pace steady. 😉

Then there was Helen who did 50:30 one year and she looked string right until the end. I hope she got under her target time. 🙂

I shouted out how far there was to go and let people know where the hills (up and down) were. And I tried to give encouragement to as many people as I could.

I kept around 8 minute mile pace until the last stretch along Mosspark Boulevard where I slowed down quite a bit and encouraged ladies to overtake me and keep pushing right to the end. I was on target to finish in 50 minutes, but as I dragged out the last wee bit i finished in around 51 minutes. 🙂

When I finished I stopped for a bit to congratulate the runners, then I was led off the the elite changing room where I had a banana and some water. Then a woman came in and gave me a big hug and said she had followed me and my balloon the while way and I’d helped her to get a pb! Great stuff. That’s what it’s all about. 😀

I had my balloon right until I got back to my car where I gave it to a young girl. 🙂

It was a great day, pity about the howling wind and rain, but hey ho, it is Scotland we live in.

I’d love to be a pacer again as its great to encourage others to do their best and I had a lot of fun doing it. Maybe I’ll be a pacer at the Great Scottish Run in September, you never know?! 😉

Well done to all ladies who took part today. 🙂 the results are here:

I’m not sure if it was you – there were two ’50’ balloons bobbing around the course – but I stuck with one right up till I felt an old injury twinge a bit at 8k. Didn’t quite manage sub-50 but did get a PB at just under 51. So thank you for doing a great job! I thought the pacers were an excellent idea 🙂
