Why I don’t drink Diet Coke or Coffee anymore…

For the majority of my life I’ve had diet coke as my staple drink.  Dad never used to let us have the real stuff, but I’d drink diet coke by the large glass full.  Then one day I was looking at my diet and decided I’d try and stop drinking diet coke.

It was hard.  When you’re out it’s probably the most convenient, cheap and common soft drink.  It’s always available.  So sometimes I just gave in and ordered it.

Then I was visiting my brother and his wife and I picked up a copy of the book ‘Skinny Bitch‘.  Here’s the excerpt which stuck with me and finally made me decide to give it up:

Brace yourselves, girls: Soda is liquid Satan.  It is the devil.  It is garbage.  There is nothing in soda that should be put into your body.  For starters, soda’s high levels of phosphorous can increase calcium loss from the body, as can its sodium and caffeine.  You know what this means – bone loss, which may lead to osteoporosis.  And the last time we checked, sugar, found in soda by the boatload, does not make you skinny!  Now don’t go patting yourself on the back if you drink diet soda.  That stuff is even worse.  Aspartame (an ingredient commonly found in the diet sodas and other sugar-free foods) has been blamed for a slew of scary maladies, like arthritis, birth defects, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and diabetes.  When methyl alcohol, a component of aspartame, enters your body, it turns into formaldehyde.  Formaldehyde is toxic and carcinogenic (cancer-causing).  Laboratory scientists use formaldehyde as a disinfectant or preservative.  They don’t fucking drink it.  Perhaps you have a lumpy ass because you are preserving  your fat cells with diet soda.  The FDA has received more complaints about aspartame than any other ingredient to date.  Want more bad news?  When aspartame is paired with carbs, it causes your brain to slow down its production of serotonin.  A healthy level of serotonin is needed to be happy and well balanced.  So drinking soda can make you fat, sick, and unhappy.

Not a bad way to put you off drinking it!  So I was put off.  Water, milk and fresh orange juice for me only.  And the odd Soda water if I was out. And it’s worked!!  I no longer crave diet coke, but drink 2-3 litres of water a day.  I feel great and my weight has reduced without me even trying!

I don’t really drink anything which has caffeine in it.  I don’t think I need it (apart from the odd caffeine gel on a long run), and even then, I think it’s maybe placebo.

When I drank coffee before I used to get a dehydration sore head from it, so I never really took it up.  Whereas there are guys in my work who drink 6-10 coffees a day at my work!! :-O

Here’s what Skinny Bitch says about coffee… see if it might put you off?  😉

Think about how widely accepted it has become that people need coffee to wake up.  You should not need anything to wake up.  If you can’t wake up without it, it’s because you are either addicted to caffeine, sleep deprived, or a generally unhealthy slob.  It may seem like the end of the world to give up your daily dose, especially if you rely on Starbucks as a good place to meet men.  But it’s not heroin, girls, and you’ll learn to live without it.  Caffeine can cause headaches, digestive problems, irritation of the stomach and bladder, peptic ulcers, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.  It affects every organ system, from the nervous system to the skin.  Caffeine raises stress hormone levels, inhibits important enzyme systems that are responsible for cleaning the body, and sensitizes nerve reception sites.  One study even links caffeine to an increased susceptibility to diabetes.  But don’t go grabbing for the decaf.  Coffee, wheather regular or decaf, is highly acidic.  Acidic foods cause your body to produce fat cells, in order to keep the acid away from your organs.  (Please, do not link this acid issue to citrus… see pg. 38 in future blogs.)  So coffee equals fat cells.  P.S.  It also makes your breath smell like ass.  Furthermore, coffee beans, like other crops, are grown with chemical pesticides.  One insecticide, DD7, has been banned in the US, but is still used by other countries from which we import coffee beans.  So every single morning, you are starting your day with a dose of poison.  Add sugar or other artificial sweeteners, top it off with milk or cream, and you’ll be fat forever.

And last but not least… Skinny Bitch recommends we drink water:

Unless you’re from Mars, you’ve heard about the “eight glasses of water a day” thing.  If you’re filling up with 330mls of liquid Satan at a time, chances are you’re  not getting your 2-3 litres of water a day.  Water is vital for keeping your body clean and detoxified.  It literally flushes out all the shit and toxins your body stores from your horrendous diet. You might be fat because you don’t poop enough.  Drinking lots of water can help with the elimination process. If the taste of water bores you, try jazzing it the flavor with a slice of lemon or lime, or, if you’re feeling sassy, toss in a strawberry or raspberry.  Say goodbye to diet coke and hello to a sweet ass.

I didn’t start drinking water because of this… but because of all the information that’s out there about why it’s important to drink water. I have two bottles in work which I refil and leave one in the fridge so that I can swap them over when I’m finished one.  It works well and I even have an app (overboard perhaps??) which can count how many bottles I drink a day.

The main reason I don’t drink coffee is not because of what I’ve read, but because I don’t like the aftertaste, don’t like drinking hot drinks and don’t like how it gives me a sore head.  But perhaps the above might put you off?

So, what do you think? Would you want to and could you go without fizzy drinks and coffee?  It’s totally up to you if you chose to stop drinking fizzy drinks and coffee and start drinking water.   I’ve done it and I feel great for it!!  And my ass is in much better shape too!!  🙂

Everyone has their vices and I’m just glad I was able to give up diet coke!

    Hi Lorn, I have giving up coffee & diet Coke, however still like the odd glass of diet Irn Bru {dont think I’ll ever give that one up}…anyway, giving up coffee was difficult at first & at the time I switched to Green Tea,adding a teaspoonful of Manuka Honey. Tetleys Green Teas are great especially the blueberry one. This is my 3rd week of doing this & I defo feel better & lighter on my feet when I run…my water intake is about 1.5ltrs a day, however am working on upping this. Overall my splits / min miles are improving week on week – roll on Edinburgh Marathon… 🙂

      Thanks Derek. I like (and drink plenty of) green tea too. I used to be like you with irn bru too (my vice was diet coke), but step by step I managed to replace it with something else. The way i saw it was that i wasnt giving up diet coke, i was having something else (soda water for me). But then again, as long as everything’s in moderation it won’t be all that bad for you, each to their own. 🙂 I like clipper green tea.

    Hi Lorn, I have also given up diet coke (used to have 2 cans a day plus share a 2 litre bottle in the evening with my hubby and daughter). I decided one day that it was time to address this problem and I was surprised how easy it was for me. I thought I would get the shakes and have withdrawal symptoms. I didn’t have any. I have always drunk loads of water so that was not a problem but now want to address my coffee intake. I always have two cups in the morning then peppermint tea for the rest of the day. My question is I have replaced the diet coke with skimmed milk which is having a knock-on effect with my weight loss. ‘m looking for another cold drink that isn’t water, fruit juice or milk, do you any suggestions. I have tried cucumber in the water plus peach but would like to see if there were any other cold drinks out there that I could drink. Many thanks Elinor.
